Over the weekend we completed one 4x8 foot raised bed. The sides are 2x10 treated lumber, but once the frame was put in place and leveled, we dug down another 18 inches so we have more like 24-28 inches of loose rich soil in there. Another recently completed project is shown here, a rain barrel built from a handful of plumbing fittings and a freebie barrel salvaged from a local source. Right now it overflows to a hose that runs away from the foundation, but the next phase will be to daisy-chain in a number of additional vessels on the same gutter for greater overall capacity. The wee potted plant next to the rain barrel is a small sage plant that has been with me for years. It looks withered now but it is starting to bounce back from the winter with a few new leaves. It's getting repotted this spring. You can also see a young blackberry bramble inside of a wire cage. The raised bed is empty at this point but we're starting a number of vegetable crops indoors and will transplant them to the bed when the danger of frost is completely behind us.
