Bamboo plant is a natural renewable resource. Besides its fast-growing nature, bamboo has many advantages in terms of social, economic and cultural benefits. More importantly, the bamboo root system and fibers are of strong rhizome, offering a high ecological function such as hydrological system to retain soil and water, and prevent erosion. It can also create a microclimate conducive to the development of live microorganisms and riverine wildlife. Considering its importance, Alstom Foundation and Yayasan Keanekaragaman Hayati (KEHATI) are in collaboration to support the preservation of bamboo species in Indonesia especially in Java. The program launched at January 12, 2011 at Bamboo Foundation Indonesia workshop, Cibinong, Jakarta will focus on planting various types of rare bamboo in several flood plains in Jakarta and Bogor. In addition to conserving biodiversity and preventing flooding, bamboo also provide benefits to the surrounding community.
